Londoner Janette Beckman began her career at the dawn of punk rock working for The Face and Melody Maker. Beckman photographed groundbreaking album covers for The Police's first three albums. Moving to New York in 1982, she was instantly drawn to the underground hip hop scene. Her photographs of the pioneers Afrika Bambaataa, Run DMC, Salt-N-Pepa, and Grandmaster Flash are collected in RAP: Portraits and Lyrics of a Generation of Black Rockers (St. Martin's Press, 1991). Beckman's work has appeared in Esquire, Rolling Stone, and Glamour, among others. She lives and works in New York. more...

We particularly like the Limited Edition of two hundred copies that include a copy of the book in a slipcase designed by Paul Smith, with your choice of one of ten images from the book, signed and numbered by the artist. The Paul Smith Limited Edition

We will be featuring a story on Janette's exhibition this fall. In the meantime, Janette Beckman says:

Once upon a time in the UK, before MTV and big business took over the music industry, before people became obsessed with money, before the time of stylists and expensive designer labels, when bands had total artistic control, anything seemed possible, there were no rules and they were making it up as they went along.

Just out of art school, I was working for the music paper Melody Maker taking photos of three or more bands a week. Around the corner in Covent Garden was my attic studio and darkroom - a tiny room with no heat and a bucket to catch the rain dripping through the hole in the ceiling. It was right in the centre of London, close to all the best clubs, pubs, and cafes, and my rent was $70 per month. Brilliant.

The bands were just like us, a mix of mostly working-class kids and former art students. There were no publicists to keep you away from the band; you traveled with them on the coach, hung out in the bar, ate in the caff, went to the sound check, and poked your camera wherever you could.

The fans were often friends of the bands. They looked fantastic: punks, skinheads, rockabilly, 2 tone, self-styled kids with that attention to detail. They were wearing bin liners (garbage bags), shopping at jumble sales, army surplus stores, ripping up their mum's old sweater, sticking a few safety pins in their school blazer to look good. It was the D.I.Y. aesthetic and it didn't cost anything.

You didn't have to follow the traditional idea of beauty to be a star. Think Poly Styrene with her braces on her teeth and wild hair singing 'Oh bondage up yours'; Shane Macgowan, the spotty punk; Jerry Dammers with this front teeth missing. Style, attitude and music were everything.

As Dee Dee Ramone said '[Punk] gave everyone a chance to say something. That's revolution'. And despite unemployment and 'No Future', many people look back on those years between 1977 and 1983 affectionately as one of the last times that their generation felt so happy and carefree.

Met up with ZOOZOOM's own Rob Hann to go and see his good friend Matty Charles playing at 'The Living Room' in the Lower East Side. Rob described Matty as the best unsigned act he knows. Well who needs signing, Matty's selling CD's at ten dollars a pop and guess what, the money's all his, no middle man. CBGB book launch at CBGB

CBGB's threw a party last night to launch their self titled book that celebrates 30 years of photographs taken at CBGB's. A publication made all the more poignant by the fact that 'rumor' has it that CBGB's will soon be closing its doors for good; their lease is up and the landlord wants to raise the rent. At first glance, it looks like it's a case of a scum sucking capitalist pig putting the squeeze on the little man, but after last night I'm thinking that cbgb's is either cheap or crap at business and maybe both. While nothing much has happened there for the past 20 years and with almost all the Ramones dead, it's still an institution in the New York Music scene with great brand recognition.

So they have a book launch, but they won't let me look through the book, "If you want to have a look, you can buy one up front" I was told as I casually flipped through the pages of books piled high on the stage. PR lesson #1: if you want free press let me look at the fucking book. PR lesson #2: invite some people who are under thirty. It was like geriatric rockers night. I couldn't get near the shuffle board; sure these guys are part of the institution that is CBGB's but surely some other bands of significance have played there in the past 20 years.

So spend a little money on marketing, work that brand and you might be able to pay the man and keep the music live.

Pretty Things Movie Premiere

Prettythings01

ZOOZOOM joined Liz Goldwyn in her daring cut out red outfit (seen above) and her entourage of bold and beautiful friends at Marquee, to celebrate her debut documentary 'Pretty Things', which is due to premiere on HBO July 19th. With a bottle of Vodka costing $295 dollars and my plus one not offering to pay, we stuck to the free mini cans of Sofia California white wine being served by models in training. Unfortunately there were no celeb spottings (well not anyone I recognized) but there were a bevy of beauties and their older male friends getting on down to some classic disco tunes. more...

ZOOZOOM is MACROMEDIA Site of the day

Mcsite

Macromedia Site of The Day

Thanks to Macromedia for featuring ZOOZOOM as their Site of the Day. Obviously we're big fans of Macromedia, where we would we be without Flash, the program that makes ZOOZOOM's design and interactivity possible. We'd be frustrated I guess because all our ideas about big originally commissioned fashion photographs and video content together with our ideas about non-intrusive full screen rich media advertising would be just ideas, or worse we'd be pumping out banner ads and irritating pop-ups within a sea of tiny pictures, just like the rest of the web. So we say thanks for the recognition and we feel good in the company of Mini, The Grammies, IBM, Audi, FIFA and Boeing: other great brands featured in the past month.
