New York Fashion Week Spring Summer 2007 [The ZOO]
New York Fashion Week :: Naeem Khan Video and Interview

Designer Naeem Khan has taken the quintessential Indian textile techniques like embroidery, beading and rich pigment dying and applied them to his new Spring 2007 collection. more...
New York Fashion Week :: Custo Barcelona Video and Interview

Custo Barcelona loves technology. I mean, the technology of making innovative clothes, that is. His latest showing at Bryant Park showed a vast array of expertly-crafted bliss. There were layers of brightly colored flocking over a patchwork of knits and prints creating a kaleidoscope of color and design. more...
New York Fashion Week :: DDC Lab Video and Interview

My favorite new shape from this collection was the gold raw silk zip poleman sleeve hoodie with the super high waist pocket short-short. It was slouchy, sexy and styled with a long beaded leather lariat, modern. There was one look that I felt was classic DDC Lab: a bright indigo shantung silk suit that was all Rock and Roll and sexy. more...
New York Fashion Week :: Heatherette Video and Interview

This season the Heathrette girl got married and went off on her tropical honeymoon. There was a chaotic, color-packed mix of florals, prints, and kitschy appliques. Think Gilligan's Island on acid. more...
New York Fashion Week :: Nathan Jenden Video and Interview

New York Fashion Week :: Sue Stemp Video and Interview

Sue Stemp's collection titled 'Byrd of America' was inspired by Derek Jarmon's film 'Jubilee' and Sally Potter's film 'Orlando'. [Kelley Quan] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Esteban Cortazar Video and Interview

His latest collection for Spring 07 was vibrant and inventive. Cortezar says this collection was inspired by the power of Grace Jones and the femininity of Monica Bellucci. [Rania Abu Eid] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Y & Kei Video and Interview

Through a blend of craftsmanship and exemplary design their mission was to open the door to a true Buddhist philosophy and create a gateway toward love and happiness. In this endeavor, I think they have accomplished their task. [Kelley Quan] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Three As Four

The Three As Four fashion show has always been an overcrazed, crowded, and much anticipated fashion event. Half the battle is getting in (apparently names on lists don't mean much). As fashion week was drawing to a close, we still weren't completely satisfied with what we had seen. We wanted to see something that moved us and went beyond the boundaries of tent dresses and jumpers. So we waited and held our breath as the trio transported us to an underwater sea and space odyssey. [Rania Abu Eid] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Jason Wu Video and Interview

Jason Wu is growing up! He's trying a thing on for size and baby, you better get ready because he's geared up and ready to impress. I am wondering what bag of tricks Mr. Wu will have in store for us next season, I am already anticipating an exciting entry into next year. [Kelley Quan] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Yigal Azrouel Video and Interview

In person, Yigal could easily be mistaken for a rock star, without the over-the-top glam, and with all of the aloof cool. The vision of the woman Yigal envisions was fully realized; the models were well cast with recognizable memorable faces and simple hair, the music was up-tempo major chord melodies, and the clothes were fully functional from the city to the beach, inside and barefoot or on the asphalt with a pair of heels. [Xenia Viray] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Tracy Reese Video and Interview

It was Tango, Salsa then Tango again at the Tracy Reese Spring show. This collection was a well thought out consistent showcase from a designer who knows her market. She's an every-woman kind of designer and that's what I love about her work. It makes sense and looks great. [Kelley Quan] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Sabyasachi Video and Interview

This Indian designer presented us with gold sequins, embroidery, rich colors, luxurious fabrics, and an entirely new way of combining it all. Think Sabyasachi: flowers in your hair, a dress you can run in that moves with you, and letting your decadent self be comfortable in big purple polka dots. [Xenia Viray] more...
Fashion Wars :: New York Spring 2007

New York Fashion Week :: Esteban Cortazar

Fashion Darling, Esteban Cortazar has done it again. His latest collection for Spring 07 was vibrant and inventive. Cortezar says this collection was inspired by the power of Grace Jones and the femininity of Monica Balucci and while you may think that is a rather schizophrenic muse-mix, I can assure you it was sharp and brilliantly executed. [Kelley Quan] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Doo Ri

Having trained under the illustrious Geoffrey Beene taught her a thing or two about cut and fabric-draping and it is not surprising that the evolution of her namesake line continues to echo the legacy of the GB House. [Kelley Quan] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Araks

You can be part granola, part Fifth Avenue can't you? Araks Yeramyan, the creator of the Araks collection entirely constructed of cotton would say yes. Concentrating on comfort and cleanliness, Araks sent her models out with fresh faces and hair completely out of their faces, decorated with braids. You could imagine Wendy from Peter Pan. You could imagine that the Araks girl was holding an oil lantern or parting tall wild onion grass to get to a stream. The serenity is built into the clothing. [Xenia Viray] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Abaeté

This season's lady was on holiday. Flop hats and chunky gold chains added context to dresses that could be worn to a New York Premiere or on an island resort balcony and the addition of French lyrics only catalyzed our imaginings of foreign getaways. [Xenia Viray] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Erin Fetherston

The buzz surrounding the California-bred, Paris-based designer had been generating for months and we expected to see some truth behind it. Instead we were disappointed at the sight of a floral-themed hippie doll-like collection. [Rania Abu Eid] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Temperley

Brit designer Alice Temperley is most loved for her romantic hippy art-deco influenced dresses. Her Spring 2007 collection was a complete departure from that. We were so utterly surprised at the Chloe influenced looks, frankly we weren?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t sure who?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s show we were seeing. True to form, we didn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t like the fact that last season?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s Temperley collection consisted of only dresses; but we didn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t think this would mean a complete change in aesthetics. The only Temperley-like dresses were present in the last three looks. We?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢re sensing an identity crisis here. Alice we miss the old you. We hope you come back. [Rania Abu Eid] more...
New York Fashion Week :: John Varvatos Video and Interview

I wished I was a guy on Tuesday because the clothes at John Varvatos were just so damn cool. Varvatos clothes are a definition of effortless cool, very much like a true rockstar, and with Iggy Pop as his spokesman there's no better proof. [Rania Abu Eid] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Cynthia Rowley

Think of Cynthia Rowley's Spring 2007 show as a kaledoiscope of sorts. Rowley's signature quirks were up her sleeve once again in a collection which featured a mix of vivid colors, waffle-like crochets, and a collage of prints on satin dresses. [Rania Abu Eid] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Vena Cava

Champagne at 1 PM, reptiles, astro turf, and toads in Bryant Park; barbecue scenes and models eating black and white cookies or lounging on fringe pillows. Vena Cava brought their installation onsite and gave viewers a reason to stop complaining about the fashionably late half hour delay which all designers have. [Rania Abu Eid] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Oscar De La Renta

Season after season we can always count on Oscar De La Renta to give us his interpretation of the classics. For Spring 2007 we were presented with a collection full of texture, brilliant color, and De La Renta's infamous volumized silhouette. [Rania Abu Eid] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Karen Walker

Walker designs for a person who likes to garden, read, and perhaps do a little graphic design or silkscreening on the side. Walker is a creative person who acts as a magnet for creative clientele. Cardigans tucked in to paper bag pants, saddle shoes, knit shorts and trousers. This is what the Karen Walker girls wears because she's a painter, because she eats a grape in the grocery store while she's browsing, because she is more concerned with her own self-expression and comfort than the possibility of being the object of the voyeuristic world. [Xenia Viray] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Michon Shur

It seems as if new and upcoming designer Stephanie Schur brought her West Coast sensibility of easy wearable dressing to New York this season. Some ideas were a bit repetitive and there was a much needed injection of color. Schur played it too safe this season with vague ideas which resulted in a lackluster collection. [Rania Abu Eid] more...

New York Fashion Week :: Lyn Devon Spring 2007 Video and Interview

We've all been reading that Lyn Devon is the new young favorite. Anticipation has grown around this designer who is so young and Ivy League in background that the lack of gimmick has proved to be a gimmick in itself. [Xenia Viray] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Project Runway

As TV cranes swooped into place and the crowd grew silent Heidi Klum bounded on to the runway with her now famous "Hello" and set the stage for the project showdown. All in all this was a thrill for all involved and I can't say who I think will win but I will say she/he may be designing a kid's line. [Bede Murphy] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Mal Sirrah

Mal Sirrah, formerly known as Malcolm Harris, is a fashion line with a mission statement. You are right, Mal Sirrah, "Darfur is real" like your t-shirt says, and for the last and final show of New York Fashion Week I am much obliged to be ushered back into the real world. [Xenia Viray] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Form

From the beginning of the first look to the close, I felt like I was in flash back mode, as if I had seen this collection before. But like a dream you can't quite recall the finer details of it was a bit fuzzy around the edges. Then it came to me: the scalloped edges on some of the jackets and sculptural tops, the wavy edgelines on the trouser/leggings were so. [Kelley Quan] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Academy Of Art

Does the MFA student collection have less of an obligation to be market-friendly? And does this freedom allow design students the luxury of invention that established designers cannot? The showing of the Academy of Art students on the first day of Fashion Week served as a case study for such questions. While some of the designers predicted the. [Xenia Viray] more...
New York Fashion Week :: TSE

When being inventive one must ask how functionality comes into play. Does fashion have a function and am I, as a designer, serving it well? In marketing terms, knit shorts will only work for those obsessed with or devoid of a preoccupation with the commercially defined perfect body. Similarly, oversized clothing tends to drown the shortest of people in cloth until their actual frame ceased to exist. [Xenia Viray] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Marc by Marc Jacobs

Forget about plain old mules and thick-soled pumps that have been on nearly every runway this season. Marc brought us high tops, loafers, Chuck-like tennis shoes, and electric indigo wrap sandals with perfect socks underneath. Because every fashionista should know that a look can be ruined by imperfect shoes, Marc's careful attention to detailed footwear gave the show an edge that every true style visionary should. [Xenia Viray] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Lewis Albert

Lewis Albert paid homage to the Mitford sisters this season. Setting the trend for the season, this collection especially brings back the allure and femininity that women/clothes once had. [Rania Abu Eid] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Zac Posen

Be it supernaturally gold or seductively sheer, we appreciate Posen's complete disregard for limitation and his embrace of beauty for beauty's sake. He designs for a woman who conducts business as pleasure, who is indifferent to, but an attractor of, attention, and who sets her own standards. [Xenia Viray] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Jason Wu

Jason Wu is growing up! He's trying a thing on for size and baby, you better get ready because he's geared up and ready to impress. I am wondering what bag of tricks Mr. Wu will have in store for us next season, I am already anticipating an exciting entry into next year. [Kelley Quan] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Afshin Feiz

It seemed that technical troubles were at fault at the latest Afshin Feiz Spring show until I recognized that it was N?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢Dea Davenport from the Brand New Heavies standing in wait for her cue to open the show. She sung from the latest album and what a delight to have live music for a change, especially after nearly a week of thump and grind club tracks bouncing around my head, I needed the respite! [Kelley Quan] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Marc Jacobs

What is there to say about a designer that has claimed his limelight and continues to produce? We can say that he remains on the edge and wearable, hushing audiences twice a season and four times a year and that this Spring 2007 collection was no exception. We can wear his sweaters and spring jackets when running out to get the mail, his caps to translate his edginess to our own looks, and his dresses when we want to be noticed. Because his inspiration is internal and too slippery to connect to a time period or season's trend, his clothing remains as new as a friend who erupts with creativity in all that he does, and continually ejects new ideas into our lives. [Xenia Viray] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Michael Kors

Michael Kors is and always will be for the seasoned fashion lover who enjoys subtlety and restraint. Although Menswear seemed relatively safe and wearable, Kors's Womenswear was most memorable when he fully went for the glamour: thick belts paired with corset top mini dresses, ballerina get ups with collar bone exposing sweaters and lace up shoes, and petticoats beneath double breasted spring coats. Every one of his wide belted floor length dresses exercised the power of simplicity that is so Michael Kors. [Xenia Viray] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Y & Kei

It was fluid and quietly sexy and to me represented the message which was relayed to me during my interview with Kei. Through a blend of craftsmanship and exemplary design their mission was to open the door to a true Buddhist philosophy and create a gateway toward love and happiness. In this endeavor, I think they have accomplished their task. [Kelley Quan] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Carmen Marc Valvo

Carmen Marc Valvo has always designed evening wear that takes us to a place of repose, no matter what the occasion. One of the most innovative treatments on some of the looks was the layering of a silk satin organza in a way that was reminiscent of the layering of rose petals in bloom. You might imagine that it would be bulky, but no, the fabric was delicate enough to mould onto the form and flow with its natural movements. As always, Carmen Marc Valvo has delivered a substantial array of lovely celebrity-worthy gowns and day wear to make us all happy and content. [Kelley Quan] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Sue Stemp

Sue Stemp's collection titled 'Byrd of America' was inspired by Derek Jarmon's film 'Jubilee' and Sally Potter's film 'Orlando' which both began in an Elizabethan town and time traveled into the future. Ms. Stemp's collaboration with fine artists Deanne Cheuk and Ben Copperwheat. [Kelley Quan] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Carlos Miele

Sometimes reptilian, sometimes floral, other times evocative of a figure skater, Carlos Miele took the drama of ballroom dancing and transferred its love of volume and ostentatiousness to RTW Spring and Summer clothing. Although there were slacks and camisoles, skirts and wrap sweaters. [Xenia Viray] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Custo Barcelona

Custo Barcelona loves technology. I mean, the technology of making innovative clothes, that is. His latest showing at Bryant Park showed a vast array of expertly-crafted bliss. New York Fashion Week :: Carolina Herrera

No matter the garment's intended function, elegance is preordained. For this season the last, and hopefully the next, Herrera was at her best when hems were floor length and cuts were tailored for the dimensions of royalty. [Xenia Viray] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Diane von Furstenberg

von Furstenberg remained new and familiar simultaneously. But what stood out in the color parade was a leisurely short sleeved suit with a paper bag waist and jacket that made me yearn for my favorite and most memorable childhood pair of matching separates. This look allowed me to conclude that there is a way to keep your childhood love of rambunctious color combinations without compromising the level of sophistication inherent in Diane von Furstenberg's design. [Xenia Viray] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Bill Blass

Michael Vollbracht's latest show for Bill Blass was a delight. There were some geometric prints that were lovely and some stronger colors, but for the most part this collection was quietly graceful. Orchid, Blush, Nude, a pale chocolate all evoked calm - a peaceful elegance. What a reprieve from the frenetic energy of fashion week to sit and enjoy a moment of tranquility from a very talented and thoughtful designer.[Kelley Quan] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Betsey Johnson

I knew it was going to be a fun show when I saw the Magnolia cupcakes on the tables sitting there all sweet and delectable. I loved the 40's and 50's style looks like the crossover wrap party dress and the Betty Gable pinup short, the red and white naval-inspired dress and the polka dot swimsuit. This collection had all the sass and frivolity of past collections but this latest show revealed a lot of wearable and fun looks that I am sure will be on the style gals hit list for Spring. [Kelley Quan] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Verrier

Ruffles were everywhere at Verrier. Although some cuts and florals evoked the Ghost of Fashion Past, Verrier worked with more interesting colors at times: two-tone blue linen with stripes, light-reflective melon colored silks, and pure silvers. [Xenia Viray] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Chris Aire

Hooked into Hip Hop, profiled as "Mr. Bling" by Rolling Stone. Though it's a bit confusing as to how to approach the garment factor in a show that is presenting a jewelry line in the tents, Aire had creative ways wearing precious metals and stones over basic brown bikinis and basics. Wear your forty grand as a sash. [Xenia Viray] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Jeremy Scott

With dark warpaint under their eyes, models came down the runway. In an array of different looks and themes stemming from symbols of American patriotism and culture. It was the only show this week brave enough to make a political statement. [Rania Abu Eid] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Nathan Jenden

Nathan Jenden's world feels like a secret and enchanted place. With brush strokes of color amongst the the whites, blacks and tans, with bravery and an undeniable understanding of aesthetics, Jenden is capable of doing what Brian Eno does in music, what Richard Brautigan does for modern pop literature: change form, change inspiration, evolve and challenge his fans while remaining his uncompromising self. [Xenia Viray] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Nanette Lepore

Designer Nanette Lepore presented a fun, youthful, spirited collection for Spring 2007. Electro and retro clicked as we saw a resurgence of fifties-era pencil skirts and leopard prints combined with eighties-influenced tops and jackets. Volumized blousons were held with corset-like belting and cropped jackets were layered with geometric print tanks. [Rania Abu Eid] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Gottex

The bathing suit is no longer just for bathing. Perhaps Gottex never thought so in the first place. Though only a very particularly shaped body would be flattered in a suit that exposed the area which some people might call their "love handles" if they are so shaped and inclined, on the body of the right woman, certain suits seemed like evening gowns. Others brought us back to the fifties, gloved hands and head wraps in classic Convertibles. Mostly black, white and brown with patterned or pink images for vibrancy, Gottex is making the one-piece bathing suit sexy, it's making a high-waisted bottom flattering, it's sunning in your sombrero and sipping a martini. It's the luxury of leisure. [Xenia Viray] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Heatherette

We always look forward to the Heatherette show because it is the true spectacle of fashion week. This season the Heathrette girl got married and went off on her tropical honeymoon. There was a chaotic, color-packed mix of florals, prints, and kitschy appliques. Think Gilligan's Island on acid. [Rania Abu Eid] more...
New York Fashion Week :: DDC Lab

The design duo Savania Davies-Keiller and Roberto Crivello are know for their downtown chic, high tech fabrics and construction. [Kelley Quan] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Diesel

Jeans were a bright shade of white and gave new meaning to the term highwaisted pant. Sweet and pretty are not in the picture here; tart and cutting are. Spring's going to be unseasonablly hot for Diesel lovers next year. [Rania Abu Eid] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Zero by Maria Cornejo

Maria Cornejo's calm demeanor was reflected at the Zero Spring 07 presentation at the Bumble & Bumble space in the meatpacking district. This collection reminded me of why it is good to edit down, abbreviate our wardrobe to achieve maximum effect. Ms. Cornejo shows us that simple really is better and I congratulate her on her recent win of the F.I.T. Award. [Kelley Quan] more...
New York Fashion Week :: Cynthia Steffe

Cynthia Steffe's latest collection evoked the beaches and town of St. Tropez. Like in collections past, I felt there were a lot of retail hits that I know we'll see in stores and on fashion savvy consumers. She knows the women she dresses and this show definitely did not disappoint. [Kelley Quan] more...
New York Fashion Week :: John Varvatos
