Fashion :: Back to the Future

Back to the Futurea

Back to the Future

Pierre Cardin's space age aesthetic was fashion-forward in the '60s and '70s, but even notions of the future need an update. Perhaps there's something more to our ambiguous sci-fiesque notion of the future than the boxy silhouettes and whites we have traditionally associated with generations to come. Create your fashion prophecy to incorporate the past: the desert highways of Born to Ride, the luxurious furs from the 'French Era' of the 1600's, the Bohemian layered look during the time of Dylan Thomas, the '60s Op Art or the decadent layering and shoulder proportions of the eighties. more...

Elena Vasileva

Mad as a Hatter

For the knit warrior, Elena Vasileva, honored as a 'Gen Art Fresh Face' in 2005, is the only designer. Having learned to knit in Russia at the tender age of seven, Elena has taken up her passion as a career goal rather recently, after working in various other industries and obtaining a degree in the design of airplanes. more...

Aurelio Costarella

Aurelio Costarella :: Designer Profile

Aurelio Costarella's design career has its origins in the era of Keith Haring and Malcolm McClaren's 'Buffalo Girls'. And although he named the pop elite of the likes of the Eurogliders and Baby Animals as his icons, this Bergdorfs and Bendel favorite designer is not limited to dressing Australia's Cremore Arcade club kids for the Red Parrot and the Silver Slipper (though he seems to be just as fond of the scene now). more...

Chris Benz

Chris Benz :: Designer Profile

Chris Benz designs for the real life Elaine Robinsons out there: someone whose ease we covet, but whose natural qualities we can relate to. Benz is known for breathing life into classic silhouettes with surprising details. Under the tutelage of J.Crew and Marc Jacobs, the 24 year-old Benz manages to bring his tailoring know-how to his goal of creating 'American Sportswear' a category that belongs to that New England or Pacific Northwest Beauty who carries her sophisticated girlishness into her adulthood. more...

Charles Chang-Lima :: One Of A Kind

Charles Chang-Lima :: One Of A Kind

Charles Chang Lima is one of a kind. He wants to understand our voice and mind and he wants us to express ourselves.

In our video interview he tells us 'Designers say the same thing, 'they love women and understand womens' bodies'. But what is there not to understand about a woman's body? I have to understand their mind, what are they really thinking? It's the key ingredient for me. You have to understand I come from a country where there is no freedom. You have no voice and have to fit in a box. So, why would I come to America to fit in a box? I want the woman I design for to have a voice.' more...

Fashion :: C'est La Vie

La Vie Parisienne

La Vie Parisienne

La Vie Parisienne's creator Catherine Popesco always stresses her love of Paris. You would too if you were her. Besides being a native to the city, Popesco's jewelry line hatched soon after she discovered a treasure of original stampings in Parisian factories and workshops; these art moldings were from up to 200 years ago, some made by those who have been canonized into the art establishment: Lalique, Mucha, Galle, and Picasso. La Vie's jewelry are all offspring of these original moldings, made in the workshop Popesco built herself in a Loire Valley vineyard in France. In Au Bout de Reves, her workshop, her team of artisans enamels each piece and sets it with Austrian crystals. more...

Fashion :: Mel En Stel Designer Profile

Mel En Stel

Mel En Stel Designer Profile

Mel en Stel is not meant to be glamorous or luxurious. It's meant to be tough like the old war materials Ilse Eriksson (the Mel en Stel designer) once used in a few art fashion pieces. It's supposed to be a little earthy, a little rugged, a little barefoot like the Belgian brains behind this grounded one-woman clothing operation. It's meant to be a product of dissecting and loving shape and fabric (and dealing with the logistics of realizing such affection.). more...

Fashion :: Black Violette

Black Violette

Black Violette

Blood red lips and flowers tinged with black are symbols of sex, but like a black widow, they have the aftertaste of danger. That which has the power to allure also has the power to harm, particularly with women who exude these 'Black Violette' charms. In Violette Nozière, the 1978 French film directed by Claude Chabrol a fourteen-year-old girl named Violette has encounters with a number of older men. Isabelle Huppert and Stéphane Audran portray characters based on a true French murder case in 1934. more...

Fashion :: The Secretary

The Secretary

The Secretary

Dark love stories and dark beauties go hand in hand. The movie 'Secretary' was exemplary of both; in Maggie Gyllenhaal's portrayal of Lee Holloway, her character, a secretary - (hence the name...) - clad in pencil skirts and button-downs, exerts her right to sex appeal, obsession, love, and S&M. Nowadays the dance between repression and expression of desires seems to go from one extreme to another. Freely expressing those workplace fantasies through cinema and fashion alike playfully confronts our culture's sexual preoccupations. And if that's too much for you to swallow, then just dwell on the sexy clothes and cheeky fun. more...

Fashion :: Water Water Everywhere

Water Water Everywhere

Water Water Everywhere

Water is ubiquitous. Its distinct forms provide a myriad of qualities to inspire fashion. Ice is clean and structured. Vapor is sheer and ever-changing. And in its liquid state, water's waves and undulations exhibit both predictable patterns and mysterious rogue waves. For its mystery, familiarity and constant change, the movement and structure of water inspires and mirrors the static nature of fashion. Here are some refreshing fashions to quench your thirst. more...

Fashion :: By the Sea

By the Sea

By the Sea

There's something about hotels along the seaside boardwalk that conjures up the idea of being on the run, where independence is the love interest that drives the adventure and the ocean is the symbol of our unconscious, our emotions, and our memories. It's where life began and where we so often long to return, so grab your Thelma and Louise headscarf and seize the sea. more...

Fashion :: Sacrifice?

Sacrifice?

Sacrifice?

Today's designers are creating garments that provoke us to compare current fashion with that of WWII. Do our reasons for fighting against the Axis Powers compare to our reasons for engaging in combat in Iraq? Consequently, are the sacrifices willing to be made then comparable to those we are willing to make now? more...

Fashion :: Jill Platner Designer Profile

Jill Platner

Nurtured by Nature

When you ask Jill Platner about her inspiration you won't get a wispy contrived response about some sort of obscure Tahitian poet from the 1700's. She'll tell you she's inspired by nature and it's visually apparent in her jewelry. And from that broad inspirational pot called 'nature,' the element that Platner hones in on is are the shapes and structures that exist in nature, a most obvious but supreme example of art and function going hand in hand.more...

Body and Sole, A Portrait of American Shoe Designers

Shoes are my life and my main fashion obsession; I am addicted to looking at them, buying them and wearing them. Always have been. Since I was a child I felt that shoes gave me magical powers - like a superhero. Wonder Woman had her bangles (and a rather fetching pair of red and white knee high boots); I have always had my shoes. more...

Arkadius

Arkadius Designer Profile

For people who wear their sunglasses at night, there is a designer who shines like the North Star of glam: Arkadius. In gold and sepia tones, this London-educated former employee of Alexander McQueen makes eyewear and fashion that celebrates 'cheeky naughtiness.' (He brought controversy to the runway by putting slogans on his t-shirts like 'Suck my le cock.') Yet his work is taken very seriously by the parties that matter. Awarded the New Generation Award by the British Fashion Council, heavily involved in creative collaborations in fashion, interior design, and Opera costume design (commissioned by Placido Domingo), Arkadius brings his uncompromising attitude, experimental concepts, and cleverness to of his projects.more...

The Great Outdoors

Now that we've watched New York Fashion Week's blaze of dresses worth thousands of dollars sashaying down the runway, it's the perfect time to get a break from all of the action by taking a road trip. Maybe you need to get out of the nitty gritty city. Maybe you're headed to a lakeside cabin, the shore, or across the country. No matter where you are going, the only thing that matters is that the convertible top is down, the grass is high, and the air is fresh more...

Fall 2007 Fashion War Winners

Fall 2007 Fashion War Winners

Democracy is in fashion again and ZOOZOOM is ready to give the people what they want. Now that Fall 2007 fashion has broken free from tents at Bryant Park and spilled onto the streets, it's time to tally the votes from ZOOZOOM's Fashion Wars and find out the style consensus.

With a total of 300,000 votes cast on New York Fall Fashion Week 2007's looks, this season we witnessed twice the number of confrontations from the season before but in the end the victor was once again Michael Kors. Now that Michael has been sitting on the throne for two seasons in a row, the American Sportswear staple has proven that many of us are still looking for Pierre Cardin's classic women's suit, but in fabrics that are comfortable and cuts that are updated.

Up there with him with neutrals, knits, jeans, and grays (yet another crowd-pleasing runway trend!) were Yigal Azrouel, and Chris Han. Beyond street-friendly tops and bottoms, it seemed the fashionistas were dreaming of the nightlife All the results and more...

Fashion :: Cheap Monday

Cheap Monday

ZOOZOOM Designer Profile :: Cheap Monday

I spoke to a Swede about Cheap Monday and there was no doubt that he knew about the company that offered fashion at, well... cheap price points. The Swede likened Cheap Monday to a disease among the indie Stockholmers, which might have negative connotations, but in this case, is a testament to CM success. Considering that the 'Cheap Monday' brand started out when Örjan, Adam, and two friends opened a small shop in a Swedish suburb that was only open on the weekendsmore...

Fashion :: Coeur de Lion

Cœur de Lion

Coeur de Lion

In Twelfth Century England, the figure of King Richard I and the Crusaders provided the sort of dramatic arch we only experience in fiction. Known as the 'Lion Hearted' for bravery in battle, Richard I was of the regal class that could enjoy the lavish imported jewelry in fashion at the time. Class structure was so rigid in medieval days that soon after Richard's era, laws dictated who was permitted to wear specific styles of jewelry. There is no need to exaggerate Richard I's life; he befriended his most feared opponent Saladin during the Holy Wars, was betrayed by his brothers, and was imprisoned for two years by the Holy Roman Emperor. His character has been the represented in at least 20 works of fiction and film, and reminds us to imagine the ornate aesthetic of old chivalry.more...

Fashion :: The Shadowlands

The Shadowlands

The Shadowlands

Fashion seems to be a shadow itself, negotiating a culture's former image with its future image, with barely a moment in which the two are reconciled. In 'Night is but a Shadow Cast by the Sun' Wright wrote, 'The present is the ever moving shadow that divides yesterday from tomorrow. In that lies hope.' Through examining the fluid nature of our identities, we find that infinite ideas and forward change become possible more...

Jason Wu Designer Profile

Jason Wu Designer Profile

Jason Wu is certainly nostalgic for the past. Citing one his influences as Horst's photography, Wu's designs resuscitate Bette Davis and Marlene Dietrich mystique and invoke Charles James's hourglass. Yet while aiming to achieve the elegance from mid century, Jason Wu also debunks the constricting nature of old-fashioned cuts, and aims to impose the elegance of eras past on today's woman. Although layers of luxury fabrics and emphasis on gowns often places Wu in the evening wear category, his risky stylistic runway choices more...

Add a Little Shine and Color with Posh & Gloss

The Twenties have often been cited as the era of inception of today's popular culture. Perhaps it is why we stubbornly continue to reference the style of the times. Or perhaps it's our identification with the roaring age that was "...anxious to enjoy itself, anxious to forget the past, anxious to ignore the future."* No matter, the reason, Gilded romanticism never seems to fade, and today's fashion designers continue to modernize its essence with garments that allow us to reflect our own light in big or small ways. more...
