Culture :: Eric Sall, Abstract Narration

The day I met Eric Sall in his studio at the Lower Manhattan Cultural council he wasted no time changing clothes and donning gloves for the launch of 6 new paintings. Never mind that he already had 8 very large paintings completed and ready for his show 'Solid Liquid' at ATM gallery. As I lurked about the space he chatted and discussed the nuts and bolts of painting. With a style that is bold and lyrical, he manages to create intimate portraits of imagined spaces using unorthodox techniques. Sometimes spatulas are used to rake smudges and stains across the surface. Other times he squeezes oil paint like toothpaste for textural flourish. more...
