Culture :: Takes One to Know One :: 3rd Ward Dance Party Portraits

Usually when I think of artist communities, I think of vegans and freegans and tofu cream cheese. Hence my surprise when the lovely Nikki Bagli, of 3rd Ward told me about their upcoming dance party and pig roast. 3rd Ward even procured a pig roasting expert, Tom Mylan (of Marlow and Sons, Diner & Bonita) to be the master of ceremonies and inspect the pork tacos and other porcine cuisine. Leave it to 3rd Ward to relieve us of the expected (albeit it a pig on a spit!)
3rd Ward is a dreamland, a business-minded artist venue that does not compromise artistry for business or business for artistry. It's 20,000 more...
Culture :: Extreme Blur

In 1996, artist Bill Armstrong began photographing collages found on the streets of the city that were created by the chance juxtaposition of torn posters on temporary construction walls. Armstrong exhibited his 'Accidental Portraits' at the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University and at the Uma Gallery in New York the following year. It was about this time, however, that the artist's approach to image-making began to shift. more...
Culture :: Vivienne Koorland

At first glance, Vivienne Koorland's paintings resemble artifacts pulled from an Archeological dig. They exude a worn, lived in charm and speak an unfiltered history. Dusty quilts of mismatched burlap and linen are peppered with a litany of repeated images, which sprawl across monumental surfaces like a child's graffiti or a piece of parchment.more...
Culture :: Littl'ans Band Profile & Record Review

The Littl'ans, a band named after the Cockney slang for children, have only been around for two years. And in that time they have managed to stake out a claim in the NME Top Ten Charts in a duet with Pete Doherty (penned by guitarist and vocalist Andrew Aveling), enjoyed the happy accident of a double booking with the legendary Echo and the Bunnymen, be solicited by Hedi Slimane to do a fifteen minute version of their song 'We Looked Good Together' for Dior's runway show, play a Hedi Slimane party on the Seine where they met Mick Jagger, and be featured in Visionaire's latest audiophile installment. more...
Culture :: Eric Sall, Abstract Narration

The day I met Eric Sall in his studio at the Lower Manhattan Cultural council he wasted no time changing clothes and donning gloves for the launch of 6 new paintings. Never mind that he already had 8 very large paintings completed and ready for his show 'Solid Liquid' at ATM gallery. As I lurked about the space he chatted and discussed the nuts and bolts of painting. With a style that is bold and lyrical, he manages to create intimate portraits of imagined spaces using unorthodox techniques. Sometimes spatulas are used to rake smudges and stains across the surface. Other times he squeezes oil paint like toothpaste for textural flourish. more...
