Culture :: C. Gibbs

Christian Gibbs newest album (his 4th) 'Parade of Small Horses' is a road trip through country music styles. The depth of his eclectic taste can be heard on 'Tenhorse' which begins on a country lane with a bluegrass feel and ends on the interstate with a driving rock-beat. If comparisons are needed C. Gibbs seems closest to the twin legends of Bob Dylan & Neil Young. Good company. more...
Culture :: Casa Susanna

A collection of photos of a late 1950s early 1960s upstate New York retreat rescued by Robert Swope from a fleamarket. Edited by Michael Hurst and Robert Swope and published by powerHouse Books
Here are photos documenting everyday women, going about their everyday lives - except that these women were men who probably lived as truck drivers, accountants, or bank presidents during the week ... Everywhere [in the photos] there is a sense of community, a tenderness, a playfulness, and more often than not a frank gaze into the camera as if to assert 'Yes, this is who I am. I'm just like you.' more...

Culture :: Apparition

A series of photographs by Bill Armstrong from the current ClampArt exhibition.
Armstrong's work represents a wonderful hybrid of media (collage, painting, and photography) that seamlessly meld original and found imagery while teasing the boundary between representation and abstraction. Culture :: Hotel Ducor

You may have an image of Africa as an AIDs ridden continent buckling under debt, poverty, civil war and brutal dictators. Its not always been perceived that way. There was a time as recently as the 70's when Africa was blossoming, the future looked bright, new hotels, roads, hospitals and a modern economic infrastructure were being constructed.
Scott Harrison visited the Hotel Ducor in Monrovia, Liberia. This once luxurious hotel is now home to thousands of squatters who became displaced during the fierce factional fighting that ravaged the country for many years. In these stark images the Hotel Ducor stands as reminder of the promises lost. more...

Culture :: The Telephones

Jesse Adelman the guitar playing, song-writing front man of The Telephones describes the band thus: "I've used 'a bar band for thinking drinkers' in the past. The alleged genre distinction 'intellipop' makes me smile, or wince, depending on the publication.... 'indie rock' has occasionally been applied, and 'roots rock' has even been used, although the term has now come to connote 'country' music, which we certainly do not purvey."
But the best insight into the mind of Jesse Adelman comes in his answer to our first question, regarding recent projects.
"We've just completed our first full-length record, entitled "Fight Night at Rodeo Dodo." The next step is to break up. I'm working on my solo project, it's a jazz dance about the last five minutes of Michael Hutchence's life." more...
