Black Tie Optional

Black Tie Optional
'...people must be very distinguished to look well in black...' -Edward Bulwer-Lyttonn, 1828
One of our favorite (and omnipresent) trends on the Fall 2008 catwalk was menswear(ish) pieces for the girls, specifically, plays on the formal dress, such as the tuxedo and its sharp lapels.
The tuxedo was born in the 1920s; it was a double-breasted reincarnation of the 1880s dinner jacket tailored to the tastes of then Prince of Wales. When the fashion traveled from Europe to America, it landed in Tuxedo Park, the millionaire playground of New York, where the new double-breasted formal wear was sported at small dinner parties. Pierre Lorillard popularized the tailless dinner jacket and named it the 'tuxedo' at an autumn ball. more...
The BUZZ
Tarina Tarantino

Tarina Tarantino wears many hats (or shall I say clips?) She is a former makeup artist, the Empress of an accessories kingdom that extends to Milan, and has recently added the title of short filmmaker to the list (alongside her husband Alfonso Campos.) Utilizing the aesthetic of musical camp from the '60s, the Tarina Tarantino moviette is part punk and part arts and crafts nerdette. Your taste for Tarina depends on your feelings about 'vintage' knick-knacks... (If you like sparkly things, you're in.) more...
Sue Stemp :: Interview

The girl in the imagination of Sue Stemp wants it all. Her femininity is empowering. She vacillates from sophisticated and still to barefoot and running. She takes risks and reserves the right to love all things traditional. She does not like to be oversimplified, and neither does Sue Stemp. more...
New York Fashion Week Fall 2007:: Doo.Ri Show and Interview Video

Doo.Ri's draped silks and jersey in the fashion of suspension dresses, draped tulip tops and skirts, liquidly bubble dresses are outstanding. It became extremely hard for me to decide upon a favorite look and in the end I chose none as I coveted ALL of them. Navy, kelp, evergreen were the deep rich tones presented here that suggested the ocean thematic and punctuated with navy and black. The beauty note here was very smoky around the eye and tousled hair piled high on the head. It was a nice contrast to the sheen of the rich fabrics. In conclusion, consider this showcase a highlight of the week and take the opportunity to get some for yourself. [Kelley Quan] more...
New York Fashion Week Fall 2007:: Zero by Maria Cornejo Show and Interview Video

My favorite look on the runway was a sleek, satin trench with a draped silk georgette dress with banded bodice. It had that head turning, downtown New York vibe that looked relaxed yet highly stylized. [Kelley Quan] more...
New York Fashion Week Fall 2007:: Heatherette Show and Interview Video

One of the biggest obstacles we've ever had to face in life occured on Tuesday night, which was of course the nightmare of getting into the Heatherette show (ticket and press pass in hand we might add). The celeb-loving, showstopping traveling circus made a stop at Bryant Park to present their take on Fall/Winter 2007 (a - la The Wizard of Oz). As Amanda Lepore waved her wand, the magic of Heatherette shined brightly on us. [Rania Abu Eid] more...
New York Fashion Week Fall 2007:: John Varvatos Show and Interview Video

What we love most is that a Varvatos show is not merely about the clothes, it's about an attitude. You'd swear those jackets came with a dose of spunk, freedom, and romance for life. We can't think of a better way to put on clothes. [Rania Abu Eid] more...
New York Fashion Week Fall 2007:: Nanette Lepore Show and Interview Video

Ms. Lepore has been working on her home, collaborating with designer Johnathan Adler, and says the process was influential for this collection. The eclectic mixing of vibrant color and prints?¢‚Ǩ‚ÄúTartan wool coats with matelass?ɬ© dresses, loose boxy jackets, her quintessential dress series, (a personal fav was the eggplant swirly sequin number) jewel tones mixed with hints of metallic, had a vintage echo, so very Nanette Lepore. New York Fashion Week Fall 2007:: Sass & Bide Show and Interview Video

Sass & Bide presented their staple of black on black, textural pieces, and elongated silhouettes as in seasons past but with the dichotomy of softer shapes and structured tailoring, we saw a new profile. I talked to Sarah Jane about what influences each collection. She explained that they look to all aspects of life and environment for inspiration. From the mundane to the spectacular, all are distilled down to what we finally see walking the runway each season. [Kelley Quan] more...
New York Fashion Week Fall 2007:: John Bartlett Show and Interview Video

Bartlett is a designer who totally understands his customer. His tailored suits in wool flannel and glen plaid are gutsy and modern yet mirror a classic line. The pants were a touch shorter to emphasize taper, some jackets had patchwork or embellishments that reiterated the theme. [Kelley Quan] more...
New York Fashion Week Fall 2007:: Patrik Rzepski Show and Interview Video

For Mr. Rzepski, fashion is a family affair, his Mom and Dad, sister and friends all coming together to help with every aspect of the show. It is a very intimate and personal presentation and one can't help but have the feeling that it's no accident that he has such a loyal and dedicated support team. His work and enthusiasm seem to be a catalyst for others who are inspired by his talent. [Kelley Quan] more...
