Digitalism

With this as the starting point, ClampArt opened 'The Evolution of the Digital Portrait' featuring Burson's fascinating 'beauty composites' of Hollywood starlets from 1982; Noah Kalina's poignant 6-minute film 'Everyday: Noah Kalina Takes a Photo of Himself Every Day for 6 Years' which has now been viewed on YouTube over 6 million times; and a lot of engaging material in between. ClampArt staples - Marc Yankus, who combines surfaces from old photographs and prints with new photographs, and the controversial Jill Greenberg - also join Aziz+Cucher, who in the mid-1990s more...

James Bidgood :: Remastered

James Bidgood

James Bidgood :: Remastered

A stylistic precursor of such artists as Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Pierre et Gilles, and David LaChapelle, James Bidgood revolutionized gay erotic imagery. Bidgood was the first to take the pulp and glamour aesthetic of the 1940s and 1950s and apply it to sexual male fantasies. Yet, his photographs, which range from camp to surreal, are still scarcely known to the wider public. more...

Apparition :: Bill Armstrong

10 pages of absorbing, ghostly photographs created by artist Bill Armstrong with commentary from curator Brian Clamp.

The artist puts it succinctly himself - "The nature of visual perception intrigues me: how the eye continually tries to resolve these images, but is unable to do so, and how that is unsettling. And I am drawn to the idea that we can believe something is real, while at the same time knowing it is illusory; that the experience of visual confusion, when the psyche is momentarily derailed, is what frees us to respond emotionally."more...
